Apple acquired Intrinsity, a semiconductor company, in 2010. This is the group that designed the A4 and A5. It's based on ARM architecture but these are still products owned, designed and used exclusively by Apple. (Although Samsung manufacturers them.)

What that other guy said. Skype was great until MS bought them, then guess what? Every update/change since has turned it to crap. The last update made it conflict with my USB mouse for some reason? Mouse port would turn on and off whenever Skype was running.

Jeffrey,

You hit the last part on the nose: a nontechnical person cannot correctly manage a technical one for all the reasons and examples you gave.

However, not every entrepreneur can get the technical skills needed to become a tech cofounder. So what do they do, if they aren't lucky enough to win the lottery of attracting one?

Traditionally that means they are out of luck and they simply flounder.

But we've come up with a new way. Now, these people can hire prescreened, highly experienced techies with project management, technical team leader, outsourcing management and quality control management skills. So this eliminates the tech cofounder battles over company direction and eventual lack of motivation due to under-market-price compensation. The idea is brand new and just in early launch phase, but results are very promising so far. If you have the time to try it, I would welcome your feedback (good or bad):http://www.vworker.com/RentACoder/DotNet/docs/TechSherpa-ProjectSherpa.aspxIan IppolitovWorker.com

Absolutely. Historically the PC has served as a great platform to try out ideas and even build big franchises. But if you wanted to make a zillion dollars (with a few exceptions) you then needed to move those games over to the consoles. I'm not sure that's true anymore.
EA is a great example -- Hawkins was able to experiment on the PC with games like Madden, but when it came time to produce returns for investors, he did it with the help of console sales.

It's about the barrier to entry. On an open platform, anyone can try writing a game or two in their spare time. If they stumble onto something good, they might look into selling it. Or giving it away. On a console, there has to be a business plan, revenue projections, funding. The minimum effort to get started is several orders of magnitude higher. And when the investors are putting in real money, they're going to be very conservative in the kinds of games they commission.

From a very simple and not revolutionary (though well designed) mobile gaming app to a movie. This is quite a hardvard business case. I mean, if Rovio can keep Angry Birds popularity for a couple of years more, it will end up becoming a classic, don't want to compare it to Pac-Man and Tetris, but what the heck, it's a record game, downloaded millions of times, available for all systems, merchandise, and now the movie, which is backed up by some well-known people in the film industry. Kudos to the people at Rovio for the multiple achievements.
