Say No to Yes
You've contracted Michael Jackson Syndrome when you surround yourself with a team that always agrees with you. As in, "Yes Michael, you should definitely get a pet panther, great idea!"
Conflict, as in Syria, is bad. But conflict, as in having a conversation about various points of view, is good. Smash ideas together and you usually end up with a better idea.
But the path of least resistance is often to just say yes. Yes boss, great idea. But your boss hired you to have your own ideas, didn't she?
And from a top down perspective, it's all too easy to squash your direct reports and tell them this is what we're doing, without creating an environment where they fight for their ideas and question yours.
Saying no to yes is a hard thing. But the moment you find yourself saying yes too much, maybe it's time to move on.
